Decorating a room can be a lot of fun, but it can also be overwhelming.

To make the process successful, keep a few tips in mind. First you need to determine your style. It could be contemporary, classic, eclectic, retro, modern or many other styles.

If you are unsure, look through magazines and collect pictures that appeal to you.

After you have several photographs, you will probably start to see a recurring theme. They will help guide you in the right direction.

When selecting color, remember that your seating, tables, flooring and other large pieces should be on the neutral side because you will probably have them for a long time.

To add interest and pizazz and keep your decor looking fresh and seasonal, use throw pillows, rugs, draperies, artwork and accessories.

Size and Layout

Of course you need to evaluate your needs first, but here are some pointers:

Don't forget to make sure the pieces will actually fit in the space. Try outlining the dimensions of the furniture on the floor with blue painter's tape. If you measure accurately, you'll avoid buying anything that won't fit in your room.

After you know the layout of the furniture, make sure that any larger pieces have a clear path into the room. They need to fit through the doorways and be able to turn any corners or maneuver any staircases.

Also, think about scale. Don't overpower a small space or under fill a great room.
